Crisis & Critical Incident Response & Debriefing

General & Health Counselling, Mediation & Consultancy understands the problematic difficulties that can arise when one is faced with untimely events that threaten one sense of wholesomeness. These problematic difficulties can come by way of a Critical Incident or through a Crisis Situation that is not anticipated, is shocking, and can affect a person emotionally, cognitively or behaviourally. GHCMC recognizes during these periods of acute emotional turmoil that people can often feel overwhelmed and incapable of dealing with the experience that as taken place.

There is also a constructive side to Critical Incidents & Crisis Situations that can also have an air of positiveness. The impact of a critical incident or crisis situation can produce an opportunity for change. It can be a time when we let go of what has been impractical and ineffectual and start afresh. It can allow for re-examination of old methods to be jettisoned and the implementations of new practical methods to be employed.

Critical Incident Debriefing & Crisis Situation is a structured approach to understanding and managing those physical and emotional responses experienced by a person who happens to be subjected to an untimely event or occurrence. It creates a supportive environment to process blocked communication, which often interferes with expression of anguish or feelings of guilt. It also corrects distorted attitudes towards or about the event as well as to discuss ways of coping with the event. The purpose of the debriefing is to reduce the trauma associated by the experience, to initiate an adaptive process to the anguish felt and experienced, and to prevent further self destructive or self defeating behavior. The goals are accomplished by allowing for ventilation of feelings, exploration of symbols associated with the event and enabling mutual support.

Successful resolution and psychological well-being is dependent upon interventions that prepares a person or individuals for periods of stress and help them return to their pre-crisis equilibrium.

GHCMC is able to assist organizations and employers with any debriefing sessions. We recommend a debriefing session should be organized within 24 to 72 hours after the occurrence of an incident or crisis.

Seeing natural feelings of denial and avoidance predominate during the first 24 hours, the debriefing session can be offered to all persons affected by the incident or crisis. Those who are particularly affected by the incident or crisis can also engage in a one on one debriefing or ongoing counselling sessions with a GHCMC Counsellor.
